If you live in Massachusetts, you will know this past weekend was a special one for us. Not only did we have two full days of sunshine—and I’m talking consistent sunshine, none of that partly cloudy bullshit—but our temps held steady in the 40s. Spring…is that you?
Unfortunately, I’ve been living in this crazy state long enough (i.e., my whole life) to know that no, that isn’t spring, and we should probably expect at least a couple more snowy days before the season actually wraps itself up. But, the point is, we are rounding the home stretch as we enter this final week of February, and you can already feel that spring awakening beginning to stir.
While this energetic buzz in the air means a lot of things for the natural world, in my world, it means a newfound vigor to get my arse out and about. While I have absolutely loved the cozy days and nights spent on the couch New England’s wintry weather has afforded me these past few months, I’m feeling a bit restless. Baby is seriously ready for the shift into spring. With that being said, I won’t lie…that first icy blast direct to the face when I step outside my door tends to take a bit of the wind from my sails. Suddenly, venturing out seems more like a schlep, and spending time in my sweats with Ramona, Bethenny, and Sonia (if you know, you know) doesn’t sound so bad anymore.
But what if I told you you can have your sweats and wear them too? When paired with the right pieces, a sweatshirt doesn’t just become acceptable for leaving the house, it can be its own gosh darn fashion statement. Have I peaked your interest? Read on for a little outfit inspo that uses your coolest closet staples to take your fave sweatshirt from schlumpy to stylish. And if there’s ever a time to rock cozy chic, transitioning from winter to spring is it.
Outfit #1: Cool and Classic in Camo
Up until recently, I wasn’t actually a huge camouflage fan. I tended to find it a bit… how do I put this nicely…tacky. Maybe it was my transition out of the city and into the wild Western—re: woodsy—part of the state, or maybe it’s because retailers have found a way to make camo “chic again” (ugh, sorry, but it’s oddly fitting in this context) through elevated basics and more subdued prints. But all of a sudden, I’m here for it. Now, crew neck sweatshirts, and especially those in prints such as this one, can veer into super casual territory extremely easily. To counter that, I recommend bringing in an edginess factor using classic “rocker-esque” or menswear-inspired pieces in a neutral color palette in order to keep the look hip and sophisticated. Studded or chunky heeled booties and a cool leather or bomber-style jacket are the perfect pairings, and topping it all off with a on-trend hat and classic shades certainly doesn’t hurt either.

Outfit #2: Basic White Sweatshirt: Street Style Edition
I mentioned this in a recent Instagram post, but there is just something about a classic knit beanie that instantly gives any outfit (yup, I said it, any outfit) that effortless cool factor that street style is known for. And when paired with an oversize sweatshirt? I mean, I don’t think I need to say anything else…the pics speak for themselves. Confession: I actually received this mens sweatshirt in one of my Express orders by accident, but decided to keep it on a whim. The Universe gave it to me for a reason, right? And honestly, since it’s only a size medium, it actually produces the perfect two-sizes-too-big fit. To balance out the elongated torso brought about by the length of the sweatshirt, I recommend creating the illusion of a long(er), lean(er) lower half. Sleek leggings and high-heeled, over-the-knee boots do just the trick. Finally, to bring the look down juuust a bit, I suggest grounding it with a more casual piece of outerwear such as a lighter wash or distressed denim jacket or varsity jacket. A fun bag and funky aviators are the perfect fashion-forward finishing touches to tie the whole look together.
